Shimmick is seeking a highly talented Safety Manager based out of the Irvine, CA office with frequent travel throughout Los Angeles, Orange, and Riverside Counties.  This challenging position will provide an excellent growth opportunity while improving the infrastructure of the city.

Electrical Division

Shimmick’s Electrical  Division, headquartered in Irvine, California, focuses on large public owners in Southern California, across water resources, water treatment, transportation and transit markets. Over the past decade, the division has grown tremendously, securing major projects, including the $350 million North City Pure Water Facility in San Diego and  the $200 million Groundwater Replenishment System in Orange County.

Responsibilities

The Safety Manager is responsible for overseeing and promoting a safe working environment across all construction activities, with a specialized focus on electrical safety. This position supports field operations and reports directly to the Safety Director. The ideal candidate will have experience in heavy civil construction and be knowledgeable in safety protocols specific to water and wastewater treatment plant projects.

 

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Monitor field activities to ensure adherence to OSHA, NFPA 70E, NEC, and company safety standards, particularly in relation to electrical hazards.
  • Conduct regular site safety audits and inspections with emphasis on electrical systems, lockout/tagout (LOTO), energized work protocols, and arc flash prevention.
  • Lead incident investigations involving electrical and other hazards; perform root cause analysis and recommend corrective actions.
  • Collaborate with electrical subcontractors, project managers, and foremen to review and enforce electrical safety procedures and site-specific safety plans (SSSP).
  • Facilitate and deliver training programs on electrical safety, including LOTO procedures, arc flash awareness, and energized work permitting.
  • Participate in pre-task planning, job hazard analysis (JHA), and daily safety briefings to address potential electrical and general safety concerns.
  • Ensure all personnel are equipped with and properly using PPE required for electrical work, including voltage-rated gloves and arc-rated clothing.
  • Support project teams with preparation and review of energized work permits, electrical hazard risk assessments, and safety documentation.
  • Assist with environmental and confined space safety compliance as applicable to water treatment facilities and heavy civil operations.
  • Stay informed of changes in safety regulations, best practices, and emerging risks related to heavy civil infrastructure and water treatment projects.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Environment, Environmental Sciences, or an applied science field or demonstrated equivalent
  • Minimum 6 years of relevant experience years of construction safety experience, including at least 2 years with a strong focus on electrical safety.
  • Prior experience working in heavy civil construction is required.
  • Working knowledge of water and wastewater treatment plant operations and associated safety hazards.
  • Effective communicator with the ability to lead training sessions and collaborate across field and management teams.
  • Proficient in incident investigation, safety documentation, hazard mitigation, and corrective action planning.
  • Valid Driver's License is required

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certification(s) such as CHST, CSP, or CUSP preferred.
  • Strong working knowledge of NFPA 70E, OSHA 29 CFR 1926 (especially Subpart K), and other applicable codes and standards.
  • Must have the ability to climb ladders while maintaining three points of contact

The salary range for this position is between $125,000 - $160,000 per year depending on experience and/or education.
