Overview

Shimmick is seeking a highly talented Electrical Field Inspector to be based out of Chattanooga, TNThis challenging position will provide an excellent growth opportunity while improving the infrastructure of the city. 

 

The Electrical Inspector will be responsible for ensuring that all electrical installations, systems, and materials comply with project specifications, codes, and standards, as well as company and regulatory safety requirements. This role is critical in delivering the quality Shimmick is known for in complex infrastructure, heavy civil, and industrial projects.

National Division

Shimmick’s National Division operates throughout the central and eastern United States and focuses on water resources including locks, dams, levees and flood control, many along the nation’s coasts and inland waterways. Comprised of legacy companies Morrison Knudsen, Washington Group International, and others, Shimmick’s National Division has decades-long history of delivering projects for repeat clients like New Jersey Transit, where Shimmick has been operating and maintaining the Hudson-Bergen Rail Line for more than 20 years.

The National Division has also delivered numerous projects for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, primarily in the water resources sector along the nation’s inland waterways and coastlines. One such project was the new Olmsted Dam on the Ohio River, where according to USACE, more commerce traverses than any other location on the entire U.S. inland waterways. With the Olmsted lock and dam replacement, economic net benefits to the nation are estimated to be more than $640 million annually.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Perform daily inspections of electrical work, including conduits, wiring, terminations, panels, grounding systems, and equipment installations.
  • Verify compliance with the National Electrical Code (NEC), project drawings, specifications, and applicable safety codes.
  • Document inspection results, non-conformances, and corrective actions clearly and accurately.
  • Coordinate with construction crews, subcontractors, and field engineers to resolve quality or code compliance issues.
  • Witness and document testing activities such as insulation resistance tests, continuity checks, and equipment functionality verifications.
  • Review and interpret electrical plans, schematics, and specifications to ensure correct installation practices.
  • Support QA/QC reporting and maintain inspection logs, photo documentation, and as-built records.
  • Monitor installation of electrical components such as transformers, switchgear, control panels, and lighting systems.
  • Collaborate with the safety team to ensure electrical work follows all site-specific safety protocols.
  • Participate in preparatory and follow-up meetings with project teams to address quality control measures.
  • Report progress and quality concerns to the Quality Manager or Project Manager in a timely manner.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelors Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or related field + 4 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education (High School Diploma/GED + 8 years of experience)
  • Extensive knowledge of electrical codes (NEC), standards (IEEE, NETA), and industry best practices.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Graduate Electrical Engineer with 5 years of experience or 10 years of experience supervising electrical features of work preferred.
  • Previous inspection experience on heavy civil, transportation, water infrastructure, or industrial projects
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical plans, specifications, and shop drawings.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to identify deficiencies in materials and workmanship.
  • Effective communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel) and field reporting tools.
  • OSHA 30-hour Construction Safety Certification.
  • Applicable inspection certifications (e.g., ICC, IAEI) a plus.

The salary range for this position is between $120,000 - $135,000 per year depending on experience and/or education.
