Overview

Shimmick is seeking Light Rail Vehicle Operators to be based in our Jersey City, NJ location for the Hudson Bergen Light Rail.

Responsibilities

The Hudson Bergen Light Rail is a 24-hour, 7 day a week operation. The train operator must operate trains safely and efficiently in accordance with federal regulations and corporate policies. Operations are conducted in a 24/7 transportation environment wherein the operator must maintain alertness and situational awareness. Train operating requires extended periods of sitting and constant hand manipulation i.e., pushing, pulling and grasping of the master controller.  The train operator must be able to work independently. They must be able to troubleshoot problems that may arise while operating, communicate clearly and effectively with the control center, and provide information and instruction, when necessary, to passengers.

 

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Responsible for the safe, courteous and professional operation of Light Rail Vehicles.

  • Professionally operate radios; inspect vehicles and record or report deficiencies as appropriate; operate track switches; provide hand signals or traffic flagging when necessary; observe track, passenger stations and power substations; report any unusual conditions; provide both bus and light rail service information to passengers in a congenial manner; complete written reports.
  • LRV Operators report to the Superintendent of Transportation as well as Transportation Managers, and Train Masters.
     
  • LRV Operators will be governed by current mechanical, electrical, and brake instructions pertaining to the safety, preparation and operation of trains
  • LRV Operators must be qualified on the physical characteristics of the territory over which they are to operate.
  • LRV Operators will be responsible for the observance of signals and for controlling movements accordingly.
  • To prevent injury to persons, to prevent damage to property, and to avoid collisions and derailments they must be able to:
    • Regulate the speed of their train
    • Exercise discretion, care, and vigilance in moving their train.
    • The LRV Operator is responsible for the conduct of other employees in the operating cab of an LRV. He or she will see that they are familiar with their duties and instruct them if necessary.
      Will be required to work nights, weekends, and/or holidays, with varying shifts
  • May be required to work during inclement weather

Qualifications

 Minimum Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license with no suspensions or moving violations within the past 3 years

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience on an operating railroad, urban transportation system, or bus rapid transit system (BRT)
  • Prior experience operating heavy motor vehicles

Additional Information:

  • Due to the safety-sensitive nature of the position, the successful candidate must pass an elevated background screening which includes a review of specific drug and alcohol testing records for the past two years from the previous employer.
  • Selected candidates must successfully complete and pass Drug and Alcohol Testing, Agility Testing and Background Screening before starting.
  • Qualified applicants must successfully complete and pass the Hudson Bergen Light Rail Vehicle training program and maintain a valid driver’s license and a safe driving record.
  • LRV (Light Rail Vehicle) operators must have an acceptable work record with a satisfactory attendance history.
  • This position does not include sponsorship for United States work authorization.
  • This position will require a variety of rotating shifts including nights, weekends, and/or holidays.
