Overview

Shimmick is seeking a highly talented Concrete/Quality Field Inspector based out of Chattanooga, TN.  This challenging position will provide an excellent growth opportunity while improving the infrastructure of the city.

Shimmick is a national Contractor that has an excellent reputation within the industry and is seeking a qualified individual to join our Southwest Division.  Shimmick takes on challenging projects and performs high-quality work ranging from expanding/constructing water and wastewater treatment plants to construction of the new Gerald Desmond Bridge.

National Division

Shimmick’s National Division operates throughout the central and eastern U.S. Comprised of legacy companies, such as Morrison Knudsen, Washington Group, and others, this division has decades-long history of delivering successful transportation, transit, mining infrastructure, and water resources projects. In addition to state DOTs and transit agencies, the National Division has delivered more than $5 billion in work for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, primarily in the water resources (dams, reservoirs, locks, levees) sector. The National Division is delivering Oklahoma Turnpike Authority’s first build-finance project, the $260 million Gilcrease Expressway project in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Inspect concrete materials, placement procedures, and curing processes to ensure compliance with contract documents and industry standards.
  • Monitor daily concrete pours and verify mix designs and batch tickets.
  • Perform field testing including slump, air content, temperature, and unit weight as required.
  • Coordinate with QA/QC teams, construction managers, and subcontractors to address any deficiencies or inconsistencies.
  • Maintain accurate and thorough inspection reports, photo documentation, and field notes.
  • Interpret and apply project drawings, specifications, and applicable codes (e.g., ACI, ASTM).
  • Assist in pre-placement inspections and post-placement evaluations.
  • Ensure adherence to site safety procedures and environmental guidelines.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • High School Diploma/GED + 4 years of related experience 
  • Strong knowledge of concrete testing procedures and inspection standards.
  • ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I certification required

Preferred Qualifications:

  • ACI Concrete Construction Inspector, Level II certification - or the ability to test and attain one within 6 months
  • Familiarity with USACE construction standards and protocols is a plus.
  • Strong communication, documentation, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work in outdoor environments and around active construction zones.
  • Previous experience on USACE or dam-related projects

 

Additional Information:

  • Qualified applicants who are offered a position must pass a pre-employment substance abuse test.

The salary range for this position is between $35.00 - $45.00 per hour depending on experience and/or education.  Overtime is expected and anticipated between 10 – 20 overtime hours per week, including occasional weekend work.
