Shimmick is seeking a highly talented Senior Field Engineer to be based out of Chatanooga, TNThis challenging position will provide an excellent growth opportunity while improving the infrastructure of the city.

Shimmick is a national Contractor that has an excellent reputation within the industry and is seeking a qualified individual to join our Southwest Division.  Shimmick takes on challenging projects and performs high-quality work ranging from expanding/constructing water and wastewater treatment plants to construction of the new Gerald Desmond Bridge.

National Division

Shimmick’s National Division operates throughout the central and eastern United States and focuses on water resources including locks, dams, levees and flood control, many along the nation’s coasts and inland waterways. Comprised of legacy companies Morrison Knudsen, Washington Group International, and others, Shimmick’s National Division has decades-long history of delivering projects for repeat clients like New Jersey Transit, where Shimmick has been operating and maintaining the Hudson-Bergen Rail Line for more than 20 years.

The National Division has also delivered numerous projects for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, primarily in the water resources sector along the nation’s inland waterways and coastlines. One such project was the new Olmsted Dam on the Ohio River, where according to USACE, more commerce traverses than any other location on the entire U.S. inland waterways. With the Olmsted lock and dam replacement, economic net benefits to the nation are estimated to be more than $640 million annually.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to the following:

Field Engineering & Project Execution

  • Provide technical support to field crews, ensuring accurate interpretation of drawings, specifications, and contract requirements.

  • Oversee layout, surveying, and grade control to maintain project accuracy.

  • Assist in structural concrete placement, earthwork, marine construction, or underground utilities, depending on the project scope.

  • Monitor subcontractor activities to ensure compliance with project specifications.

  • Help manage and implement construction methodologies and best practices in collaboration with the superintendent and project team.

Quality Control & Safety Compliance

  • Conduct field inspections to ensure work meets Shimmick’s quality standards and project specifications.

  • Work with the Quality Control team to document and resolve non-conformances.

  • Assist in safety audits and enforce compliance with OSHA and Shimmick safety policies.

  • Promote a safety-first culture by proactively identifying and mitigating potential hazards.

Scheduling & Cost Management

  • Assist in developing, updating, and maintaining project schedules using Primavera P6 or equivalent software.

  • Track material quantities, labor hours, and equipment utilization to support cost control efforts.

  • Identify and help resolve potential project delays or budget overruns.

  • Coordinate with procurement teams to ensure timely delivery of materials.

Communication & Coordination

  • Work closely with project managers, superintendents, foremen, and design teams to facilitate smooth execution.

  • Prepare and track RFIs (Requests for Information), submittals, daily reports, and as-built documentation.

  • Participate in weekly construction meetings to discuss project progress and challenges.

  • Serve as a liaison between the field and office, ensuring seamless communication and issue resolution.

Technology & Documentation

  • Utilize construction management software such as Procore, Bluebeam, or HCSS for tracking project data.
  • Support the implementation of BIM, GPS surveying, and drone technology for enhanced project accuracy.
  • Maintain organized field records and documentation for closeout and future reference.

Qualifications

 

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or related field + 8 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Primavera P6, Procore, and Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Strong understanding of heavy civil construction methods, means, and materials.

  • Ability to interpret plans, specs, and technical documents.

  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations and safety standards.

  • Effective leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to work in outdoor and high-paced field environments.

Additional Information:

  • Qualified applicants who are offered a position must pass a pre-employment substance abuse test.

The salary range for this position is between $135,000 - $145,000 per year depending on experience and/or education.

These benefits are available to all employees working more than 20 hours per week. Employees working less than 20 hours per week are eligible for medical, dental and vision coverage as well as EAP services.
