Shimmick is seeking a Facility Specialist based out of Jersey City, NJ for the Hudson Bergen Light Rail.

National Division

Shimmick’s National Division operates throughout the central and eastern U.S. Comprised of legacy companies, such as Morrison Knudsen, Washington Group, and others, this division has decades-long history of delivering successful transportation, transit, mining infrastructure, and water resources projects. In addition to state DOTs and transit agencies, the National Division has delivered more than $5 billion in work for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, primarily in the water resources (dams, reservoirs, locks, levees) sector. The National Division is delivering Oklahoma Turnpike Authority’s first build-finance project, the $260 million Gilcrease Expressway project in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Performs maintenance, repairs and/or inspections on boilers, HVAC units, ductwork, bathroom and plumbing fixtures, hot water heaters, sump pumps, and building doors and floor drains
  • Maintains and/or performs routine inspections on generator, air compressors & air dryers, pumps, car wash equipment, fire protection systems, UPS systems, building lighting, and oil/water separators
  • Verifies thru working with others that the building machine ship equipment, cranes, and hoists are in working order.  Notify Supervision when not properly working
  • Performs skilled craft work related to the above including welding, cutting, pipe fitting, and minor electrical work.  Can make minor repairs to machinery.  Uses common hand and power tools
  • Inspect and diagnoses problems and determines the best way to correct them.  Checks repair manuals, drawing, parts catalogs in doing so.
  • Obtains supplies and parts from storeroom and/or requests ordering same
  • Responds to Operation Control Center
  • Completes and submits various inspection documentation and/or maintenance checklists
  • Transporting of furniture and/or equipment within the building
  • Perform touch up painting and necessary weather proofing were required
  • Cleaning of facilities including bathrooms and window
  • Trash removal, landscaping, snow removal
  • Flagging protection.  Must be qualified to flag after 3 months form date of hire.
  • Assist during emergencies to restore service
  • Perform other duties assigned

Internal candidates interested in applying must have completed the probationary period, if applicable, for the position they currently maintain as specified in the agreement between Shimmick and the TWU Local 229.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Three years of similar work experience
  • Experience in the operating & maintaining of low-pressure boilers and possessing a Class B boiler license is required.
  • Experience and working knowledge with various mechanical, electrical, and steam equipment including HVAC systems, hot water heaters, bathroom and plumbing fixtures, fire protection systems, air compressors, diesel/electric generators, machine shop equipment, and cranes/hoists.
  • Applicant must have a valid Driver’s License and a clean driving record for the past 3 years
  • A Certified Drivers Abstract presented at the interview is required to validate driving records

Additional Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 3 years of carpentry experience or equivalent track experience
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license with no suspensions or moving violations within the past 3 years
  • At interview, present a satisfactory driver's abstract showing violations, suspensions, and points for the past 3 years

Physical Requirements:

  • Outside exposure to all weather conditions including wind, extreme cold and heat on or in close proximity to railroad tracks.
  • Must be agile and implement safe practices to preclude slips, trips, and falls when working around ballast, uneven surfaces and loose material in day, night, or portable lighting conditions
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds
  • Must be able to handle strenuous walks along uneven surfaces
  • Must have good visual acuity, including ability to distinguish colors, depth perception and peripheral vision plus normal night vision
  • Must have acute hearing with the ability to distinguish and separate sounds around heavy machinery, noisy equipment and tools, voices near and at a distance
  • Demonstrate agility and coordination while lifting, stooping, carrying heavy loads

Additional Information: 

  • Selected candidates must successfully complete and pass Drug and Alcohol Testing, Agility Testing and Background Screening before starting.
  • Incumbent must be able to pass the required DOT Physical Exam.
  • This position does not include sponsorship for United States work authorization.
  • Relocation benefits are not available for this position.
