Overview

Shimmick is seeking a highly talented Electrical Senior Estimator based out of Irvine, CA.  This challenging position will provide an excellent growth opportunity while improving the infrastructure of the city.

Electrical Division

Shimmick’s Electrical  Division, headquartered in Irvine, California, focuses on large public owners in Southern California, across water resources, water treatment, transportation and transit markets. Over the past decade, the division has grown tremendously, securing major projects, including the $350 million North City Pure Water Facility in San Diego and  the $200 million Groundwater Replenishment System in Orange County.

Responsibilities

Typical responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Develop accurate and timely electrical construction estimates on which we base competitive bids and proposals for our client-base of General Contractors, Owners, Developers and end-users.
  • Analyze and interpret detailed drawings and specifications.
  • Determine and price value-engineered alternatives to plans and specifications.
  • Perform budget pricing from schematic drawings and narrative.
  • Draft scope letters, proposals and vendor solicitations.
  • Lead the functions of the Estimating Department; the education and development of junior personnel; on-going development and maintenance of computerized estimating programs and databases; congenial relations with clients and vendors.
  • Work under deadline pressures in an efficient, composed and calm manner.
  • Work on change-orders and cost-to-complete estimates of on-going projects.
  • Help create and communicate company standards for estimating electrical design/build and plans and specs work.
  • Review estimates created by others for accuracy and completeness.
  • Perform job handoffs from estimating to operations through clearly demonstrating detailed scopes of work, specifications and job specific conditions

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or related field + 8 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent project management skills with ability to multitask and prioritize competing demands in deadline-driven environment.
  • Professional written and verbal communication skills to deliver presentations with confidence
  • Proficient computer skills and Microsoft Office suite of applications.
  • Supervisory experience desired, able to delegate, coordinate work of others, monitor performance, and deliver feedback.
  • Experience in estimating heavy industrial water/wastewater/public works infrastructure electrical construction projects.
  • Demonstrated experience in electrical power, instrumentation/controls, schematics and control diagrams.
  • Must demonstrate ability to effectively organize and manage multiple projects, and work with minimal supervision.
  • Experience in hard-bid contract work as well as conceptual estimating.
  • Experience in Concrete structures and Wastewater Treatement Plants
  • Experience on water resources and water treatment plants
  • Works toward alignment of customer and company objectives.
  • Participates with management in development of strategies and plans.
  • Understands estimating terminology and measures and recognizes processes/project actions that may impact the project.
  • Participates in the analysis and utilization of estimates to predict key project issues.
  • Participates in the evaluation of business opportunities and potential profitability.
  • Assists the Project Manager in presenting, trouble-shooting and improving estimates.
  • Understands construction means, methods, and sequences.
  • Assists in preparing budgets and performance plans.
  • Oversees the preparation of crew build-ups and production rate determinations.
  • Determines construction equipment selection.
  • Manages the preparation of an estimate.
  • Experience in train and developing estimators – entry level to experienced IBEW Craft members
  • Evaluates suitability of scope and execution plan for basis of estimate.
  • Collects, analyzes and archives project data. Develops historical documentation.
  • Reconciles current project estimate comparisons with previous performance and market benchmark data.
  • Negotiates internal issues, priorities, and deadlines.
  • Prepares and negotiates change orders.
  • Performs contingency and risk analysis.

Additional Information:

The salary range for this position is between $160,000 - $190,000 depending on experience and/or education.

These benefits are available to all employees working more than 20 hours per week. Employees working less than 20 hours per week are eligible for medical, dental and vision coverage as well as EAP services.
