Overview

Shimmick is seeking a highly talented Construction Field Engineer to be based out of San Jose, CA, Orange County, CA, Central Valley, CA, and  Norwalk, Connecticut.  This challenging position will provide an excellent growth opportunity while improving the infrastructure of the city.

Since the mid-1990s, Shimmick company Legacy Foundations has been providing self-perform geotechnical and foundations services for critical infrastructure projects. Legacy a complete portfolio of deep foundation, slope stabilization, shoring systems; and ground improvement services. Legacy also maintains a large fleet of specialized equipment fleet.

 

Shimmick has a long history of completing complex water projects, ranging from the world’s largest wastewater recycling and purification system in California to the record-setting Hoover Dam. Responsibilities

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to the following:

  • New employees will have an opportunity to work in the field with our foundation installation crews and be responsible for documenting and reporting on the Quality Control aspects of the work. 

  • Many quality control documents are required to be prepared by Legacy Foundations in order to gain acceptance of the work by the Owner or Owner Agency.  Legacy Foundations Quality Control program is based on both scientific and engineering principles, thus making it interesting and challenging to those persons with either an engineering or science degree. 

Main emphasis of field work will include training to become proficient at:

 

  1. Construction safety and awareness
  2. Pre-construction survey and layout
  3. Documenting installed work and filling out required QC forms
  4. Soil identification
  5. Concrete workability testing
  6. Preparing As-built documents
  7. Rebar inspection
  8. Drill fluid and slurry testing
  9. Completing acceptance paperwork packages for submission to the Owner/Agency

 

Main emphasis of office work will include training to become proficient at:

 

    1. Pre-task job planning
    2. Daily activity pre-task planning
    3. Reading and understanding geotechnical borings
    4. Reading and understanding project specifications
    5. Reading and understanding project plans
    6. Document control
    7. Writing “Request For Information (RFI)” to the governing agency
    8. Attending weekly planning meetings both in-house and with the Owner/Agency
    9. Integrating information from plans and specifications onto field QC worksheets

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelors Degree in Civil or Geotechnical engineering field, or a field science degree such as Geology, Hydrology, Environmental Sciences, or Natural Resource Management or related field or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in heavy civil construction quality control or jobsite control, with an emphasis on field documentation, principles of survey and layout, and task planning. 
  • Computer skills include Microsoft Office suite, and Legacy Foundations will provide training on in-house specialty software either for field documentation purposes, running instrumentation, or job specific document control.

 Additional Information:

  • Qualified applicants who are offered a position must pass a pre-employment substance abuse test.
  • This position does not include sponsorship for United States work authorization.
  • The QC Engineer should expect to have to travel and be located abroad for some projects.  Legacy Foundations has the potential to obtain work in all 50 states and the QC Engineer would have the potential to work and live for short periods of time in many different locations during the course of their employment. 
  • Per diem and travel expenses are covered by Legacy Foundations. 
  • Perks for individuals showing strong growth potential after 6 months employment may include company vehicle, company gas card, or additional time off.
  • Legacy Foundations offers strong dedicated on the job training and provides a strong mentorship program with an emphasis on supporting and growing the new hire to quickly gain skills that outpace normal growth and learning curves in other areas of heavy civil construction. 

  • Project durations range from a few weeks to about 1  to 1 – ½ years in length, so the QC Engineer is not stagnant in one location for long periods of time.  Each job is unique and offers its own challenges and thus, opportunity for sustained growth. 

The salary range for this position is between $75,000 - 95,000 per year depending on experience and/or education.

These benefits are available to all employees working more than 20 hours per week. Employees working less than 20 hours per week are eligible for medical, dental and vision coverage as well as EAP services.
