Electrical Division

Since the early 1990s, Shimmick has been self-performing electrical scopes for civil projects. Shimmick offers electrical expertise in transit, water/wastewater, alternative energy, power generation and transmission civil work, as well as commercial building projects. This division’s ability to self-perform offers additional value to clients and enables better control of cost and schedule for projects with major electrical scopes. The Electrical Division serves clients which include municipalities, water districts, sanitation districts, transit agencies, private developers, DOTs, and USACE.

Responsibilities

The Electrical Field Engineer is responsible for activities relating to construction engineering within the Electrical discipline. Duties include interpreting electrical design drawings and specifications, cable installations and terminations, field verification of materials, and technical direction to field electrical personnel as required. This position will be responsible for a variety of construction tasks utilizing National Electric Code, Drawings, Specifications, and standards related to raceway/cable tray, cable, electrical equipment installations. This position is not considered the design authority for the project, but only to enforce electrical construction per design. This position requires good planning and organizational skills, ability to perform detailed inspections and the ability to produce accurate, clear, and concise documentation. 

 

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate with engineering on constructability and design issues relating to the electrical discipline such as installation and testing of electrical systems, lighting systems, high voltage equipment, grounding, lightning protection, and fire detection systems.
  • Develop work plans, coordinate material take-offs and requisitions, perform and document inspections, report progress, and resolve conflicts in design and construction related to the installation and testing of electrical commodities.
  • Establish an electrical design/field engineering working relationship and lines of communication with the Project Engineer, including agreement on electrical engineering deliverables and overall construction application configuration management.
  • Responsible for quantity take-off, control, tracking, reporting, and forecasting for electrical discipline.
  • Coordinate with the Electrical Superintendent for field procured materials, material substitution, services and equipment including panels, motors, and switchgear.
  • Review material receiving reports and warehousing to assure delivery of correct electrical materials.
  • Coordinate and monitor the interfaces for electrical data exchange to support the construction automation plan and the project controls program requirements at the jobsite.
  • Support the electrical construction quality program.
  • Coordinate with Electrical Superintendent to plan/support construction schedules.
  • Plan and recommend electrical procedures to be implemented by Electrical Superintendent to ensure construction operations are within requirements of engineering design and specifications.
  • Work with project engineering, start-up engineering and operating personnel to coordinate electrical construction activities.
  • Coordinate subcontract activities to ensure electrical materials, equipment and quality comply with design plans and specifications and interpret vendor design documents and installation manuals.
  • Implement controls over variables affecting electrical installation progress such as raceway, cable, terminations, and equipment. Also ensure engineering and procurement provide timely delivery of drawings, materials and equipment and that other corporate programs are fully utilized.
  • Plan and prepare electrical work packages
  • Perform other duties as required by Electrical Superintendent.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelors Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or related field + 2 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or other relevant technical discipline from an accredited university as well as a minimum of 2+ years of relevant work experience, or 6+ years of relevant experience in the absence of a degree.
  • Experience in construction and technical inspection of electrical design in areas such as installation and testing of electrical systems, lighting systems, high voltage equipment, grounding, and cable pulling activities.
  • Demonstrated commitment to Environment, Safety and Health (ES&H). Demonstrated commitment to a Zero Accident safety program. 
  • Must be computer-literate in word processing, CAD, spreadsheets, and database applications.
  • Must be familiar with current industry quality standards.
  • Beginner to advanced experience in field engineering activities
  • Detailed knowledge of the National Electrical Code and NFPA 70E Codes.
  • Understanding of electrical single line diagrams, electrical block diagrams, electrical wiring diagrams, electrical panel schedules, raceway/cable tray plan drawings, and electrical support drawings.
  • Experience using Accubid is helpful (not required) doing takeoffs, estimating for new projects and helping with bid process.

 Additional Information:

The salary range for this position is between $90,000 to $110,000 depending on experience and/or education.
